De geschiedenis van de heerlijkheid Berkenrode gaat terug tot 1284. Achter de duinen ligt de 18e -eeuwse buitenplaats Oud Berkenroede van Leidse en Amsterdamse regentenfamilies die in de zomer de stinkende stad ontvluchten. In 1793 werd het zomerhuis aangekocht door de zeer vermogende Cornelia Catharina Hodshon die toen ook een groot herenhuis liet bouwen aan het Spaarne in Haarlem. Van 1891 tot 1904 woonde op Oud-Berkenroede de burgemeester David Eliza van Lennep. In de vroegere tuin aan de achterzijde tot aan het Station is in de jaren 1930 een woonwijk aangelegd. Het Rijksmonument Oud Berkenroede is sinds 1956 in privé bezit.

The history of the Berkenrode seigniory dates back to 1284. Behind the dunes lies the 18th-century country estate Oud Berkenroede of Leiden and Amsterdam regent families who fled the stinking city in the summer. In 1793, the summer house was purchased by the very wealthy Cornelia Catharina Hodshon, who then also had a large mansion built on the Spaarne in Haarlem. From 1891 to 1904, mayor David Eliza van Lennep lived on Oud-Berkenroede. A residential area was built in the 1930s in the former garden at the rear of the station, leading to the station.
